2015 Manning Senior Farm Trip

Dairy Barn

We all got to try milking a cow.  It felt really weird and different from anything we'd done before, but it was fun!

The milk shoots out fast, so you have to be careful and help aim it into the bucket.

Farmers today use machines to help milk the cows every morning and evening.  If they tried to milk all the cows by hand, it would take too long and the cows would be uncomfortable.  Using the machines also helps make sure that the milk stays fresh and free of any germs.

Dairy Barn chores required a lot of work and were not just about learning how to milk a cow.

The dairy cows go outside for recess each day, and while they play we had to clean!  Cows can't clean up after themselves, so we cleaned their stalls and made sure that the beds for the pregnant cows were super clean.

We also got to feed the cows hay and grain, and clear their water fountains so they can have fresh water.
